Roae Issues Statement on 2010-11 State Budget Proposal
Rep. Brad Roae (R-Crawford) issued the following statement on Gov. Ed Rendell’s proposed $29 billion budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year. The budget calls for a spending increase of $1.2 billion.
“Increasing state spending by more than 4 percent when tax revenue is already coming in hundreds of millions of dollars short is irresponsible,” Roae said. “We should be looking at a billion dollar spending cut rather than a billion dollar spending increase.
“In Rendell’s first year in office the budget was less than $21 billion. If spending would have increased by 3 percent each year for the past seven years we would have a $25 billion budget. The proposed $29 billion budget is way too much spending.
“The $1 billion of proposed Capital Budget projects should be scaled back to just $500 million and directed to the most urgently needed improvements, such as bridges.
“An additional $10 million could be cut from the fraud-ridden Welfare Special Allowance Program. Another $100 million can be cut from the Legislature’s funding and governor’s office funding. That’s just four of the 600 line items in the budget, and many other items can be cut.”
