Roae Opposes Gambling Expansion in Pennsylvania
1/6/2010

Rep. Brad Roae (R-Crawford) issued the following statement following the vote on the conference committee report on Senate Bill 711, which would allow Pennsylvania’s casinos to offer table games such as roulette and blackjack:

“I voted no on table games because none of the tax revenue will go toward property tax reductions.   People were promised significant property tax relief when casinos were authorized in 2004.  Supporters of table games say the state needs the table game tax revenue, but I think homeowners have a greater need for relief.

“State spending in the General Fund budget has increased by about $7 billion in the past seven years.  The projected annual $250 million in table game tax revenue is less than 1 percent of the $28 billion General Fund budget.  The state spending too much money will not be corrected by table games.

“The conference committee process was also a sham. The bill was rewritten as part of a back-room deal before the conference committee was officially announced.  An hour after the members were appointed to the conference committee, a 230-page rewritten bill was printed and ready to vote on.  The public meeting of the conference committee lasted only 15 minutes.”

"With an ongoing casino corruption investigation being conducted by the Attorney General’s office, I think it would have been prudent to address the issue of casino reform before we authorized new gambling.”
