Roae Says Rules Changes Could Prevent Future ‘Bonusgate’
Rep. Brad Roae (R-Crawford) said today that much of the alleged corruption of the type described in the charges leveled today by Attorney General Tom Corbett could not happen now.

“The class of 50 new representatives I came in with in 2007 pushed hard for the open records law that was enacted and for changes in the House rules designed to prevent corruption of the type that has been alleged in the past few weeks,” Roae said. “Legislative leaders can no longer keep staff payroll records, bonus information, contracts, invoices and so forth secret.”

The attorney general today charged three more people as part of an ongoing investigation into public corruption.

Charged today were House Majority Whip H. William DeWeese (D-Greene/Washington/Fayette); Revenue Secretary Stephen H. Stetler, a former representative; and Sharon Rodavich, an aide in DeWeese’s district office in Waynesburg. Charges made by the attorney general include conspiracy, fraud, and theft.

“If they are convicted, they should be punished with the maximum prison terms and fines,” Roae said. “They are presumed to be innocent until they have their day in court. If the charges turn out to be true, they stole from more than 12 million Pennsylvanians.”
