Roae and State House Vote Down Governor’s Tax Hikes, Again
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Brad Roae (R-Crawford/Erie) and his colleagues in the state House today in Harrisburg voted down a tax hike proposal offered by Gov. Tom Wolf. Following the vote, Roae issued this statement:

“The governor’s proposal would have increased the state Personal Income Tax by 16 percent. That is equivalent to a 16 percent pay cut for the working Pennsylvanians who pay this tax.

“Approximately 95 percent of the tax increase would have come from a higher Personal Income Tax.

“The governor said he wanted to enact a $1 billion severance tax on natural gas drillers, but his proposal called for a $1.4 billion tax increase on working people. The severance tax would have raised $67 million.

“Revenues from the state Personal Income Tax increase with inflation. As people earn more in their paychecks, the amount of taxes they pay also increases. If the state budget grew at the same pace as people’s earnings, there wouldn’t be a budget problem.

“I believe Pennsylvania’s budget problems are the result of spending too much, not taxing too little. I voted to protect taxpayers.”
