Track PennDOT Plows During Snowstorm

With forecasts calling for 9 inches of snow or more this weekend, residents should take steps to prepare for the inclement weather. Thankfully, there’s an app for that.

PennDOT has a helpful mobile application and website that provides information about the location of plow trucks, the flow of traffic on various roads and information about road closings.

Keep in mind that PennDOT plow trucks often spend several hours plowing on a single route and then returns to refuel and refill with anti-skid materials. By the time the plow gets back on its route, new snow may already have covered what was already plowed. While it can appear a plow truck has not yet been by a particular road or route, they may have been there within the past two or three hours.

PASSHE Board of Governors Met This Week

I participated this week in the first quarterly Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Board of Governors meeting since I was appointed to serve on the 20-member panel. The board oversees the 14 state-owned universities, including Edinboro University, Clarion University and Slippery Rock University.

The board voted to advance the system redesign initiative, which will result in many positive changes. A student at a PASSHE university will continue to take most of his or her classes at that university, but he or she also will have access to classes at the other 13 universities. As a result, students will have access to a much wider selection of classes. The plan also calls for improvements in administrative areas to make the system more efficient.

You can review the preliminary plan at systemredesign.passhe.edu.

Steelhead Management Program

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission invited me to tour the Fairview fish hatchery and help net steelhead out of Trout Run. Eggs from the fish will be collected to raise and fish that will be stocked later. You can watch a video showing how the fish are captured.
