State Budget Spends Too Much, Future Tax Increase Incoming, Roae Says

February 3, 2026

HARRISBURG — Rep. Brad Roae (R-Crawford/Erie) issued the following statement in response to the $53.26 billion Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget proposed by Gov. Josh Shapiro today:

“A massive tax increase is coming if we keep spending several billion dollars a year more than is coming in. The prior two budgets, which I voted against, had a combined $8.5 billion in deficit spending, and this budget proposal has $6.46 billion in deficit spending. Everyone understands that if a household will earn $47,000 this year, they cannot spend $53,000. Here the numbers are a lot bigger: $46.8 billion in revenue and Gov. Shapiro wants to spend $53.26 billion. Households need to earn more to spend more, and state government has to tax you more to spend more. I cannot support this budget proposal that spends 6.2% more than the $50.1 billion budget we just passed back in November.”
